Dataset facts
- Official source
- HungaroMet Hungarian Meteorological Service Open Data
- Coverage
- Surface stations across Hungary (19 counties and Budapest). Availability differs by resolution, station tier, and parameter.
- Update frequency
- Sub-daily observations update on regular operational cycles; century reference series cover 1901–2025; historical climate records span 1870–2025.
- Licence
- Creative Commons Attribution 4.0, with HungaroMet attribution.
- Important limitation
- Recent high-frequency observations may undergo subsequent quality control. Multi-century records combine reference stations subject to historical relocation.

What this explorer contains
The explorer processes selected HungaroMet open data products at 10-minute, hourly, daily, monthly, century (1901–2025), and historical (1870–2025) resolutions. The selected station and resolution determine which parameters and dates are available.
- Map View locates stations across Hungary with elevation-coded markers and county filters.
- Station Info lists station identifiers, coordinates, elevation, and metadata periods.
- Dashboard presents interactive plots, KPI summary cards, and extreme indices.
- Data Tab displays processed observations with sortable columns and CSV download.
Choose a resolution that matches the question
- 10 Minutes preserves the exact timing of convective precipitation, wind gusts, and rapid temperature shifts within a 31-day window.
- Hourly captures diurnal cycles and sea-level pressure patterns across up to 366 days.
- Daily tracks seasonal variations, temperature envelopes, and multi-year precipitation sums.
- Monthly summarizes long-term station histories from 2002 to present.
- Century (1901+) provides homogenized daily climate series for 10 reference stations across Hungary.
- Historical (1870+) extends daily temperature and precipitation records back to 1870 for 14 reference stations.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is HungaroMet?
HungaroMet Nonprofit Zrt. is Hungary’s national meteorological service, formerly known as OMSZ (Országos Meteorológiai Szolgálat). It operates the national surface observing network, radar network, and climate archives.
What time resolutions does the HungaroMet explorer offer?
The explorer offers six temporal resolutions: 10-minute, hourly, daily, and monthly for the automatic network (~342 stations), as well as dedicated century (1901–2025) and historical (1870–2025) climate reference series.
How does the explorer handle missing data sentinels?
HungaroMet archive files use -999 and -999.0 as missing data indicators. The explorer automatically sanitizes these placeholders to true null values before calculating statistics or rendering charts.
How can I download HungaroMet station observations?
On the Dashboard tab, select the Data subtab to view the loaded observation table, then click Download CSV to export the filtered station data.
