EuroMeteo Explorer places observations from participating station networks in a single cross-border view. Use it to see which stations reported air temperature, precipitation, mean-sea-level pressure, or wind speed at a selected UTC hour, then open a station dashboard for its available variables and recent history.
EuroMeteo is an independent Climate Explorer application. It retrieves European surface observations exposed through EUMETNET MeteoGate; Climate Explorer is not affiliated with EUMETNET or the national publishers.

What the map represents
Each colored marker is a station with a usable value for the selected variable and UTC hour. Empty areas can reflect sparse network participation, a missing variable, reporting latency, or an observation rejected by the Explorer’s plausibility checks. They do not necessarily indicate an absence of weather.
The map is most useful for inspecting the spatial pattern of available reports across borders. Elevation, coastal exposure, urban setting, instrumentation, and observation timing can explain differences between nearby stations.
What happens to the data
EuroMeteo retrieves recent observations from the MeteoGate service and older dates from Climate Explorer’s local archive. For the station Dashboard, the application:
- maps supported upstream names to stable display fields;
- converts supported quantities to display units;
- chooses a preferred measurement variant where a timestamp contains alternatives;
- applies physical-bound, relational, and short-lived spike checks;
- can derive dew point from air temperature and relative humidity when dew point is absent.
Values that fail those site-level checks are shown as missing. These checks supplement rather than replace validation by the original publisher. The Dashboard and downloads therefore contain processed observations, not an untouched copy of every upstream record or quality flag.
Coverage, timing, and selection
- Country coverage is federated: the station catalogue depends on participating services and can change.
- The latest hour can be incomplete: measurement and delivery times differ among stations.
- Dashboard periods are bounded: normal station requests cover at most 31 days; stations reporting at 10-minute or finer intervals may be limited to 15 days.
- Variables differ by station: the Dashboard only creates charts and columns for data available in the selected period.
- Precipitation durations matter: one-, three-, six-, twelve-, and twenty-four-hour accumulations are distinct quantities.

What does EuroMeteo show?
EuroMeteo shows available E-SOH station observations exposed through MeteoGate. The map displays air temperature, precipitation amount, mean-sea-level pressure, or wind speed for a selected UTC hour; a station Dashboard can show additional reported variables.
Are the markers a continuous weather map?
No. Each marker is a point observation. EuroMeteo does not interpolate values between stations, so the map should not be read as a gridded analysis or forecast.
How current are the observations?
The application is designed for near-real-time viewing, but there is no single guaranteed latency for every station. Reporting schedules, upstream availability, and processing delay vary, so an earlier UTC hour may have more complete coverage than the newest hour.
Can I download EuroMeteo observations?
Yes. Select a station and period, open the Dashboard, and use CSV or Excel. The download contains the processed rows used by the Dashboard; consult the EuroMeteo guide for the exact workflow and the official source when untouched upstream records are required.
