- Coverage
- Metropolitan France and overseas departments; explorer metadata includes station-dependent records from June 1688 onward. The 6-minute precipitation product begins no earlier than July 2005.
- Update frequency
- Météo-France updates files for the most recent two years daily; older batches follow monthly or annual schedules depending on the period and resolution.
- Licence
- Licence Ouverte 2.0 / Open Licence 2.0.
- Important limitation
- Station availability, variables, time basis and record length vary. Recent files can be revised, and overseas timestamps may use the provider’s local legal time rather than metropolitan UTC.
What you can compare
- 6-minute precipitation: Examine short rainfall increments at stations that provide this product.
- Hourly observations: Follow within-day changes in temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind, pressure and other available fields.
- Daily observations: Compare daily means, minima, maxima, totals and weather indicators over a longer period.
- Monthly observations: Examine seasonal and multi-year station patterns using provider-supplied monthly values.
The same variable is not available at every station or resolution. The station catalogue shows the parameter groups and resolution availability represented in the explorer metadata.
Read station differences carefully
These are point observations, not a gridded national average. Coastal exposure, elevation, urban surroundings, valleys, mountain terrain and island settings can create large differences between nearby stations. A selected station therefore describes its observing location; it should not automatically be generalized to an entire department.
The explorer’s Active and Closed labels summarize the station metadata and available record. They do not describe whether a station is staffed, which instruments are installed now, or whether every parameter is currently reporting.

Which Météo-France time resolutions can I explore?
The interface provides 6-minute precipitation, hourly, daily and monthly modes. Availability depends on the selected station and period.
Does 6-minute mode include temperature and wind?
No. In this explorer, 6-minute mode is for precipitation only. Choose hourly, daily or monthly mode for other parameter groups when the station provides them.
Are all timestamps UTC?
Météo-France documents metropolitan files in UTC and overseas files in local legal time (FU). Check the source documentation and the selected product before combining stations across time zones.
Does Climate Explorer replace the official archive?
No. Climate Explorer provides an independent viewing and export layer. Météo-France remains the authoritative source for files, field definitions, quality control and revisions.
