WMO Climate – Global Monthly Observations
WMO Climate Observational Data
The WMO Climate Explorer provides interactive access to near real-time and historical monthly climatological reports (CLIMAT) from the global World Meteorological Organization (WMO) network.
CLIMAT reports are generated by weather stations worldwide at the end of each month, summarizing the monthly observations. This dataset enables monitoring of global climate anomalies, long-term trends, and seasonal evolutions.
Unlike static climatological normals, this dataset is updated monthly. It connects historical climatological data streams with the most recent monthly observations, providing a continuous view of global climate variability.

- Important limitation
- Station reporting completeness, record length, and specific variables provided vary by country and region.
About this Data
The variables presented represent monthly observations compiled from official CLIMAT bulletins. Coordination is managed by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), ensuring standardization of observations across different national networks.
Through Climate Explorer, you gain streamlined access to this global network of monthly data, allowing you to:
- Track Real-Time Anomalies: See how current months compare to historical baselines.
- Analyze Long-Term Trends: Examine multi-decade observations of temperature, precipitation, pressure, and sunshine.
- Export Clean Datasets: Download complete CSV records of parsed observations for any station.
How to use this tool
- Global Navigation: Select stations directly from the map or use the search controls.
- Filter by Country: Use the sidebar to filter the stations list to a specific country.
- Visualize & Export: Go to the Dashboard tab to view charts of temperature, precipitation, pressure, and sunshine duration, or export the raw observations to CSV.
Variables Explained
The explorer supports the following climate variables:
- Mean Temperature: The monthly average temperature calculated from daily measurements.
- Max/Min Temperature: Extreme monthly max/min temperatures and their daily averages.
- Precipitation: Total monthly precipitation accumulation and count of days with at least 1 mm of rain/snow.
- Pressure: Mean monthly atmospheric pressure, adjusted to sea level.
- Vapor Pressure: Average atmospheric moisture content.
- Sunshine Duration: Total hours of bright sunshine.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are CLIMAT reports?
CLIMAT reports are standardized monthly summaries compiled by national weather services from selected meteorological stations. They are transmitted globally to facilitate climate monitoring.
How often is the data updated?
New data is added monthly, typically within the first two weeks of the following month, as the Deutsche Wetterdienst (DWD) compiles and quality-controls global submissions.
Can I download the raw observations?
Yes. Select a station and navigate to the Dashboard tab. Click the Download CSV button to download a complete table of all historical monthly observations for that station.
