A practical exploration sequence

  1. Choose the resolution that matches your question.
  2. Set a date range. The map and station table update to show matching records.
  3. Select a station from Map View, Find Station or Station Info.
  4. Review the station summary before interpreting a plot.
  5. Open Data to check the numeric values and missing fields.

Short intervals preserve more event detail, but they also create larger requests. The interface therefore limits a single request to about 93 days for 10-minute or hourly data, 366 days for daily data, and 1,826 days for monthly data.

Interpret comparisons carefully

JMA station tables do not all contain the same elements. The official AMeDAS documentation explains that the automated network observes precipitation, wind, temperature and humidity, while snow depth is available at a subset of sites. Observatory tables can include additional elements such as pressure, visibility or cloud-related observations. Instrumentation and reporting practices also change over time.

Before comparing two stations or periods, check:

  • whether both stations report the variable at the chosen resolution;
  • whether missing values or source-table symbols were parsed as blank cells;
  • whether the station location or equipment changed; and
  • whether a daily or monthly aggregate answers the same question as an hourly or 10-minute value.

Why do two stations show different columns?

JMA stations do not all have the same equipment or table structure. AMeDAS and observatory tables can expose different elements, and coverage can change through time.

How long can one request be?

The current interface allows about 93 days for 10-minute or hourly data, 366 days for daily data, and 1,826 days for monthly data.

Can I download the displayed observations?

Yes. Select a station and period, open Dashboard, and use Export Excel. The workbook is a Climate Explorer convenience export of parsed JMA source tables.

Is Climate Explorer the official JMA service?

No. JMA produces and publishes the observations. Climate Explorer independently retrieves and presents selected records and is not affiliated with or endorsed by JMA.
