NOAA SSOD Daily Weather Stations: US, Canada & Global Data
NOAA SSODv2 overview
Climate Explorer provides an independent interface for the NOAA/NCEI SSODv2 global daily archive. Climate Explorer is not affiliated with NOAA. SSODv2 provides meteorological summaries across the United States (US states including Alaska and Hawaii, plus Puerto Rico, Guam and the US Virgin Islands), Canada (provinces and territories), and worldwide networks, featuring UTC-aligned temperature, wind, pressure, and precipitation. It is tailored for meteorological, climate, and environmental researchers analyzing multi-decade daily weather observations, extreme weather events, synoptic storm systems, and station time series.
NOAA/NCEI maintains and publishes SSODv2 summaries assembled from contributed synoptic reports. Climate Explorer retrieves, parses, and presents those records; NOAA/NCEI remains the authoritative source for the archive, summary definitions, and documentation.

About the selected station
Central Park, New York City, United States — UTC daily summaries
This is the NOAA station named NY CITY CNTRL PARK. Its observations describe one site in New York City, not an average across the five boroughs. Comparing this series with an airport record requires checking both the location and reporting practices.

Verified in the 2025 file only. A supplied daily summary is not a guarantee of complete extremes or precipitation. Missing dates and values remain unavailable, not zero.
A full month of daily observations
The full July 2025 example contains all 31 UTC daily summaries. Daily mean temperature ranges from 23.1 to 30.5 °C (73.6 to 86.9 °F). NOAA's supplied counts show 23–24 hourly values for each daily mean. Reported minima and maxima still require the SSOD limitations below.

For Central Park, a UTC summary day spans portions of two New York civil dates. During July, 00:00 UTC is 8 pm on the previous local date. A July 2 SSOD value therefore cannot be read as an official July 2 local-calendar extreme.

Interpretation and limitations
NOAA warns that synoptic messages can underreport precipitation and miss the true daily temperature extremes. SSOD is derived from GHCNh and is not an independent confirmation of it. For official local-day extremes, check a suitable NOAA daily climate product.
Sources and how this example was prepared
Values are NOAA's supplied daily summaries; no hourly-to-daily recomputation is performed. The -9999.9 missing sentinel is converted to unavailable. The mean-temperature measurement code records the number of hourly values used by NOAA. A reporting count does not certify that every true daily extreme or precipitation amount was captured. Dates follow the UTC summary day, not the local calendar day. Displayed temperatures use Celsius (°C), with Fahrenheit (°F) equivalents calculated as °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 and rounded to one decimal. Source CSV temperature values remain in Celsius.

What you can discover
Use the interactive map and station catalog to explore SSODv2 records across North America and global station networks. Depending on contributing reports, stations provide mean, maximum, and minimum temperature; dew point; sea-level and station pressure; visibility; sustained wind and gust; precipitation totals; snow depth; and weather indicators.
North American station networks & ID cross-referencing
- US & Canadian Coverage: Use the country filter to select the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, or the US Virgin Islands, alongside global stations in the NOAA catalog.
- Station Search: Find Station searches by station name or 11-character GHCN identifier (e.g., Central Park
USW00094728). USUSW000GHCN IDs embed the 5-digit WBAN number (94728), so typing it can also match; Canadian and other IDs do not follow this pattern. - Key Research Use-Cases: Ideal for climate research into historical temperature extremes, heatwave duration, winter freeze events, synoptic storm tracks, and multi-decade daily time series.
- Direct Excel Export: Download parsed, quality-checked daily observation records for any station and custom date window directly to formatted Excel (
.xlsx) workbooks.
Best use
The Explorer is best for discovering stations, tracing event sequences, and screening daily conditions on a consistent UTC basis. For an official rainfall total, temperature extreme, or record claim, verify the value against the responsible national meteorological service or a suitable daily climate product.
Try a documented example
A short station sequence is more informative than an abstract feature list:
- Open the Central Park SSOD view for 1–23 July 2026.
- Confirm the station identifier,
USW00094728, before reading the series. - Inspect maximum temperature for 1–4 July and open Data to check the displayed rows and gaps.
- Read the Central Park heatwave case study to see how the principal value was checked against an official local report.
For exact instructions, exports, parameter definitions, completeness checks, and troubleshooting, use the SSOD task guide.
Interpret the display responsibly
- Confirm identity: record the station name and identifier; nearby stations are not interchangeable.
- Keep the time basis explicit: every displayed date is an SSOD UTC summary day, not automatically a local climatological day.
- Treat blanks as unavailable: a missing value is not zero. Measurement counts can describe how many reports contributed, but do not certify a complete extreme or total.
- Match the variable to the question: mean, maximum, and minimum temperature describe different properties of the day.
- Verify consequential claims: NOAA cautions that precipitation may be underreported and that SSOD maximum and minimum temperature may not capture true daily extremes.
To place a daily sequence in climate context, use a matched station, variable, and calendar period in the WMO Normals Explorer. A normal is a reference, not a forecast or a complete explanation of an event.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the SSOD dataset?
SSOD stands for Synoptic Summary of the Day. It is a comprehensive database maintained by NOAA providing daily weather observations aligned to UTC.
Why is UTC alignment important?
It aligns all aggregations to a UTC calendar day (00:00 to 23:59 UTC) rather than local climatological days, supporting consistent comparisons between stations in different time zones.
Does SSOD include daily weather observations for the United States and Canada?
Yes. Select United States or Canada (or Puerto Rico, Guam, US Virgin Islands) in the country filter, then use Find Station to search by station name or GHCN identifier. US GHCN IDs such as USW00094908 embed the 5-digit WBAN number.
Can SSOD alone confirm an official daily record?
No. SSOD is useful for screening and reconstructing UTC-day sequences, but NOAA notes that synoptic precipitation may be underreported and that maximum or minimum temperature may not capture the true daily extreme. Verify record claims with the responsible national meteorological service or an appropriate daily climate product.
Does Climate Explorer produce the SSOD summaries?
No. Climate Explorer is an independent interface and is not affiliated with NOAA. NOAA/NCEI maintains and publishes SSODv2 summaries assembled from contributed synoptic reports; Climate Explorer retrieves, parses, and presents those records.
