EuroMeteo – European Meteorological Data Explorer
European Open Data Overview (MeteoGate)
EuroMeteo Explorer is an interactive dashboard for exploring near real-time meteorological observations across Europe and beyond. Developed as an independent project, it exploits the data provided by the MeteoGate platform to provide access to thousands of stations following the WIS 2.0 / E-SOH standards, including high-resolution data for temperature, precipitation, wind, and pressure.
MeteoGate, operated by EUMETNET, acts as a “One-Stop Shop” for European meteorological information, integrating data from National Meteorological Services into a unified flow. This tool focuses on the E-SOH (European Surface Observations HVD) dataset, providing detailed station-level insights for air temperature, precipitation, wind speed, and more.

About this Data
EuroMeteo is your gateway to the MeteoGate platform, a groundbreaking initiative by EUMETNET (The Network of European Meteorological Services). This system standardizes the flow of real-time weather data across the continent, adhering to the World Meteorological Organization’s WIS 2.0 (WMO Information System) protocols.
Through Climate Explorer, you can visualize the E-SOH (European Surface Observations HVD) dataset in real-time. This provides:
- Pan-European Coverage: A unified view of weather from Iceland to Cyprus, including overseas territories, removing the need to visit dozens of separate national websites.
- Harmonized Data: Standardized units and formats, allowing for direct comparison of temperatures in London, Berlin, and Rome.
- Rapid Updates: Data streams directly from National Meteorological Services (NMS), minimizing latency.
Unique Value: Real-Time Situational Awareness
Unlike historical archives, EuroMeteo focuses on the Now. The Observations API delivers the last 24 hours of measurements, making it the ideal tool for: 1. Aviation & Logistics: Tracking current visibility and wind conditions across transport corridors. 2. Emergency Management: Monitoring the progression of storms or heatwaves as they cross national borders. 3. Meteorological Analysis: Verifying numerical weather prediction (NWP) models against ground truth in real-time.
How to use this tool
- Overview Map: The map displays thousands of active stations. Zoom in to see the dense network in regions like the Alps or the Benelux.
- Country Filter: Use the sidebar to focus on specific networks (e.g., “Germany (DWD)”, “France (Météo-France)”, “Spain (AEMET)”).
- Station Inspection:
- Single-Click: View quick details on the map.
- Double-Click: Open the full Station Dashboard to see 24-hour trends.
- Visualize: The Plots tab automatically generates temperature curves, precipitation bars, and wind roses for the last day.
- Export: Need the raw numbers? The Data tab allows you to view and copy the precise values for your own analysis.
This service specifically utilizes the Observations API from MeteoGate (observations.meteogate.eu), which provides land-based surface observations. Please note that data is available for the past 24 hours only.
MeteoGate is a key component of the WMO Information System 2.0 (WIS 2.0), ensuring that meteorological data is discoverable, accessible, and interoperable across borders.
