About

Learn about the Climate Explorer project, technology stack, and the data stewardship behind the dashboards.

Our Mission

Climate Explorer is a tool designed to provide easy access to meteorological data and meteorological observations produced by well-known weather services. This project does not produce any kind of data; it simply visualizes and makes accessible climatological data “as is”.

This data originates from National Meteorological Services under the recommendations of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), ensuring standardized and high-quality observations. We believe that open access to quality climate information empowers individuals, researchers, and decision-makers to better understand our planet’s changing climate system.

About the Project

This project visualizes historical and current climate observations from these authoritative sources:

  • EuroMeteo – Independent interactive dashboard exploiting near real-time European meteorological observations provided by MeteoGate (WIS 2.0 / E-SOH)
  • DWD OpenData – Comprehensive meteorological observations from Germany provided by Deutscher Wetterdienst
  • Météo-France – Comprehensive meteorological observations from France provided by Météo-France
  • JMA – Meteorological observations from Japan provided by the Japan Meteorological Agency (daily, hourly, 10-minute resolution)
  • IMGW – Meteorological observations from Poland provided by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW-PIB) (hourly, daily, monthly resolution)
  • NOAA GHCNh – Global Historical Climatology Network Hourly data enabling analysis of sub-daily climate variability
  • NOAA GHCNm – Global Historical Climatology Network Monthly data providing long-term climate records from weather stations worldwide

Technology Stack

The dashboards are developed using modern data science tools:

  • Shiny – Interactive web applications for data exploration
  • Quarto – Scientific publishing system for documentation
  • MapLibre GL JS – High-performance interactive mapping capabilities
  • Plotly – Dynamic data visualizations

Data Sources & Stewardship

All data presented originates from official meteorological archives:

We are committed to transparent data presentation and maintaining the integrity of the original observations.
